Northmark: Hour of the Wolf is a turn-based role-playing game in which the player has to create a character, choosing from different classes and races (although they do come predefined) and then set off on an adventure full of intrigue, assassination and life-or-death combat.
The story is one of the strongest features of Northmark: Hour of the Wolf, as it not only tells you the story of an interesting adventure that starts with the king's assassination, but also takes you through an interesting, varied, nuanced world.
While the story of Northmark is important, the deep turn-based combat using cards will motivate most players to keep playing. Its greatest achievement is that it is able to offer gameplay that is neither too complicated nor too simple, which sets it apart from games like Magic: The Gathering or Spectromancer.
You have a mere 180 different cards to choose from, including creatures, characters, attacks, defense modifiers, healing potions, magic and a lot more. You will learn how to use all of them during the first fifteen minutes of the game as a tutorial explains all of their effects.
Northmark: Hour of the Wolf is an excellent card-based role-playing game. While its slow style might not win everyone over, fans of this rare genre will love it, especially in Mac.
